Yay, fixed the iTouch after about 10 restores... my kids will be happy, I hope...

Posted at 10:19 pm 6th July 2009

The Shame of It

My Xbox does indeed have more of a life than I do... however that is because I am rebuilding FUB's PC which seems to have had a virus that wiped most the hard disk.

Then on top of this I am trying to sort out my old iTouch to give to my boys. But unfortunately it is stuck on a restore screen.

And to top it all off I seem to have a plague of fruit flies flying around me which are most annoying. No idea where they are coming from, but they are really fucking me off.

So today came as a bit of a shock to all in my department as we were told to reapply for our jobs, and that we should be aware that there will be more people than places, and the rest of our company can apply for those jobs too.

Oh happy days.

I will have to see what the redundancy will be... but this could be the start of me changing my career. If anyone has suggestions let me know, but I am considering;

O2 Tethering

You can change the config of your iPhone 3Gs for free to allow it to tether. There are 3 ways of doing this...

1) Pay O2 15 quid a month

2) Use your iPhone and go to http://help.benm.at, then select your country and your iPhone will configure everything for you

3) Download

http://rapidshare.com/files/246271713/O2_UK.mobileconfig.html
MD5: A72526AD0F3B5FC66F90D9ACCB2EC735

And email it to your iPhone, open the attachment, click ok to warnings etc... configure tethering, and job done.

Enjoy, and a special mention Mr C for the site

So today is payday, and new iPhone lauch day, but also a working day. And I am stuck in meetings until lunchtime when I hope to be able to pop out and get an iPhone 3Gs. Apart from that I don't know what the day has in store, lots of documentation to do, and finishing off Lego Indiana Jones, and get boarding for my loft which I may start work on tonight dependant on whether any beers are being drunk tonight.

I would also like to thank Major Nelson for taking time out of his exceptional busy diary to accuse me of cheating. Thats really harsh. Boo to you.

Accidents will Happen

Today I had a foot and hand catasrophe.

Firstly I reached down to plug in a laptop under my desk and brushed my finger against the leg of the desk. The result was that I got a 1cm long splinter right under my finger nail. Blimey, that hurt, and still does even after I removed it. Serious pain guys.

And then I went into my kitchen and droped a glass which shattered leaving a piece of glass in my foot. Which I removed and have plastered up.

So waiting for the the third thing to happen.

Until then I have decided to get the iPhone 3Gs on the proviso it isn't too much hassle to get one in the first place. I also have to think about what to get my youngest boy for his brithday. Robots and Star Wars are high on his list, but a decent full size R2-D2 costs around two grand, so maybe something smaller is in order.

Lots of footy talk going on as well, with Arbeloa looking likely to leave Liverpool, along with Babel. But no David Villa coming to us, so not sure what is going to happen. Real Madrid will certianly be very interesting to watch next season thats for sure.

Also, feverishly trying to finish Lego Indiana Jones due to a discrepency in my Xbox Gamescore due to an electrical issue corrupting the data of my saved game it thinks I actually got 100 percent even though I haven't completed it. I don't want people thinking I'ma cheat now do I?

Blogging DigitalGod in PHP

So I had a few emails about my PHP code which was cool, so I thought I would delve into my blog code to explain how some of the things work for those that are interested. For those not into coding, normal blogging service will resume shortly.

My blog is basically a single lightweight-ish piece of PHP code, the RSS feed input is a seperate file which can be run as a CRON job, or manually whenever I wish to pull updates from other sites. The blog code loads them in a chronological order.

I won't detail the basic links etc, as I will assume you guys know how to do that....

So the first thing is to workout the browser incase you want to do browser specific things, like not so flash objects if on an iPhone.

$useragent = @$_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'];

Also check to see if any parameters are passed. I pass the date if somneone uses my calendar, otherwise I assume people want to see the latest blog. I then convert a passed date into a timestamp, and also understand the day, month and year for later use.

foreach ($HTTP_GET_VARS as $key => $value)
$selectday = $value;
if ($selectday == "")
{$selectday=time(); $theyear=date('Y',$selectday); $themonth=date('n',$selectday);}
else
{$theyear = substr($selectday,0,4); $theno = substr($selectday,8,2); $themonth = substr($selectday,5,2); $selectday = mktime(23, 59, 59, date($themonth) , date($theno), date($theyear));}

I ensure the timestamp relates to 23:59:59, as it will ensure all entries upto midnight are captured for that date. I then workout the number of seconds in four weeks, and do a loop checking blog entries stamped between the two time stamps and display them. To show 4 weeks on any one page.

I then ensure that I check the main body of text that I am showing in my blog and have a number of checks in the format of...

$speech = str_replace("Box of X", "Box of X", $speech);

Which allows me to hyperlink key words like Box of X, Eon and Melfnerg. I also check for URLs in tweets and hyperlink those too.

I use the same process of timestamps to control comments, each of which are timestamped.

The rest of the stuff is just HTML making things look nice, a little bit of Flash, and some average calendar code, which is quite complex. But if I get feedback from anyone wanting to see it I will publish that too.

Any questions just email me or tweet me.

FYI, during my off hours, I was partying it up over Xbox live... I was having so much fun, I forgot what else happened yesterday... so we will simply ignore what happened today, ok? Dont worry about your streak. I wont tell if you dont. We will just keep it going.

Twitter to PHP part 2

So I hope you understood how to parse an RSS stream into PHP using MagpieRSS. My blog's core database structure is set out below...

thewords mediumtext
title text
thetime varchar(20)
timestamp varchar(16)
tnphoto varchar(250)
bigphoto varchar(250)

thewords is the main blog text, or the tweet if taken from twitter.

title is the title of the blog. If the title is 'tweet' then I know it has no title, but it has come from twitter and put that on the blog entry.
thetime is a DD-Month-YY format for the date, this is really a legacy work around from when I first strated the blog and isn't strictky required
timestamp is a record of the timestamp when the blog entry was created
tnphoto and bigphoto are links to my Flickr page with the thumbnail location, and larger image location, as the two locations are not related so must be stored seperately.

I have a seperate table to store comments on which has a timestamp field to record the chronological order.

I hope that helps those who were asking.

@melfneerg will post mysql tables tomorrow :)

Twitter to PHP

Okay, I challenged myself to make the code below more simple... so this is the code to parse a Twitter feed into a mySQL DB using PHP. You need the Magpie RSS Parser which you can put on your host, a PHP file, and then include that in your code.

The reason I use the RSS feed over the API is that unless you have full access to your own server you probably won't be able to save pages using traditional PHP methods onto your server and pass them. So using RSS, allows the source server to in effect pass the page for you. Although sometimes you will be limited in the amount of information you get back. That is the only down side.

So to put Twitter into your blog...

// Connect to your database

mysql_connect($host,$user,$password);
mysql_select_db($database);

// Load the Magpie RSS parser for PHP

require_once('magpierss/rss_fetch.inc');

// Place the RSS feed URL in the $url variable and parse it
// using Magpies fetch_rss function

$url = "http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/14701597.rss";
$rss = fetch_rss($url);

// Now a loop which will go through the $item array created by Magpie
// Each variable is collecting data from its named XML tag
// e.g. $item[description] pulls the data between the
// some data here tags

foreach ($rss->items as $item ) {
$desc = $item[description];

// This is the Unix time stamp - 1 hour for BST
$flktime = $item[date_timestamp]-7200;
// This creates a more English version of the date
$realtime = date('Y-m-d',$flktime);
// I create a title called Tweet for all Twitter
// Twitter entries in my blog
$ftitle = "tweet";
// The Tweet itself, but it is prefixed with your
// Twitter ID, a colon, and space so digitalgod:
// I removed the first 12 chars from the string so
// that isn't seen on my blog
$desc = substr($desc, 12);

// All my blog entries have a Unix time stamp so I know
// the chronological order of my posts
// By checking to see if a blog entry has the same time
// stamp I can see if I am duplicating blog entries
// from Twitter
$query = "SELECT * FROM blog WHERE (thetime=$flktime)";
$result = mysql_query($query);
$row = mysql_fetch_array($result);

// If I am I ignore the entry, otherwise I add it
if ($row) {} else
{
$query = "INSERT INTO blog (title, thewords, timestamp, thetime) VALUES ('$ftitle','$desc','$realtime', '$flktime')";

// Then I commit the query and add the data to my DB
$result = mysql_query($query);
}
;}

Passing RSS in PHP

This is for anyone, but primarily for Tudor... how I pass a RSS feed in PHP using self-taught highly inefficent code... the example is for RSS from Flickr, but the principle works for any feed if you know your XML tags in it....

// Create a variable and backup with the time stamp in it
$selectday=time();
$selectdaybackup = $selectday;

// Place the URL for the RSS feed in a variable
// This is the URL you get when you manually click RSS feed from your page
// Fetch the feed using a PHP addon called rss_fetch from magpiers
require_once('magpierss/rss_fetch.inc');
$url = "http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?id=1234563402&tag=blog&lang=en-us&format=rss_200";
$rss = fetch_rss($url);

// Now pass the feed in the variable $rss by knowing the XML tags
foreach ($rss->items as $item ) {
$ftitle = $item[title];
$url = $item[link];
$desc = $item[description];
$imgtn = $item[link];
$thedate = $item[pubdate];
$flktime = $item[date_timestamp]-7200;
$realtime = date('Y-m-d',$flktime);

//Grab the necessary data by chopping up the resultant description string that contains most the data I want (may not need to for Facebook)
$imgstart=strpos($desc, "img src")+8;
$desc=substr($desc,$imgstart);
$imgend=strpos($desc,"width")-2;
$imgurl=substr($desc,1,$imgend-6)."t.jpg";
$desc=substr($desc,$imgend+20);
$txtstart=strpos($desc,"/p")+8;
$desc=substr($desc,$txtstart);
$txtend=strpos($desc,"/p")-1;
$desc=substr($desc,0,$txtend);

// Now I add the result variables into my database
// But first I check to make sure their isn't an exisiting entry with the same time stamp
// This helps prevent duplicates when passing the same data multiple times
$query = "SELECT * FROM blog WHERE (thetime=$flktime)";
$result = mysql_query($query);
$row = mysql_fetch_array($result);
if ($row) {} else
{
$query = "INSERT INTO myblogdb (speech, blogtitle, ticktock, thetime, tnphoto, bigphoto) VALUES ('$desc', '$ftitle', '$realtime', '$flktime', '$imgurl', '$imgtn')";
echo "
$query
";
$result = mysql_query($query);
}
;}

@melfneerg Yeah, I basically took the Twiiter or Facebook RSS feed, and passed it, then passed the result into the blogs database

Hair Gel

So last night passeth with some celebrating the depature of that sulky diver footy player from the land of mancs by donning hair styles thick with gel. Perhaps coincidence, but maybe not.

No stories of myth or legend last night, but a pleasent celebration of Mark and Geoff's brithdays. I spoke to Neil and we talked about things that can't be talked about. Mark said the boat will be in the water next year, but in one piece or many he would not say. Eon discussed travelling the world and shagging vulnerable kiwi girls. And Mike the architect suggested I need to strengthen my loft up if I was to put any furniture up there to support the Scalectrix project that will probably never happen.

This morning will be a mad panic as I make my place child friendly, or to put it another to move anything worth a lot of money out of reach of my children. And then the next 24 hours will be dedicated to watching them put finger prints on my flat screen tvs, lego mini figures in my fish tank, and to clean up any blood stained injuries before their mother picks them up again.

Oh happy days!

Mike the Architect is out tonight, as is Geoff, as its his birthday as well. A busy night of tales of myth and legend await

So do I get the new iPhone? Or is there a better phone for me out there?

Posted via Twitter at 10:46 am 11th June 2009

The Chrysalis of a Polymath

So today I said goodbye... not to Cheltenham and Gloucester, no, but to Setanta Sports. That was an incredibly hard thing to do. Not because I loved it so for its UC fights and LFC TV, no... because cancelling involved eight telephone calls, 3 emails, and two letters sent recorded delivery before it was all sorted. Never again.

Today I also said goodbye to Orange, my mobile provider for well over ten years. There service quality has gone down hill somewhat, and the new iPhone 3Gs with 32GB is out... so I will probably change to O2 now I have my PAC code in hand. Saying that, Orange were able to miraculously reduce my bill by 70 percent a month if I wanted to stay, and give me pretty much any phone they did free too.

But it is not all goodbyes, oh no, there were hellos. I received Grid for the Box of X today, so I will play online with Cheese, and who knows, maybe Colatron if he wants to be crashed off the track and beaten. But there is more still, oh yes... today I received that long awaited book... Chrysalis of a Polymath, in which I am referred, but only in passing, and then near the back. But it is a second of fame. And if you never heard of it, which you probably haven't, then you obviously aren't into the art of physcological magic and illusion. But if you are... get the book, as it has some nice methods.

So life continues to tumble along, the fishes are fishing, the scalectrix is zooming, and General Vezax is kicking our butt in warcraft. Happy days.
